Cairo,
30 September 2015 - As part of the Egypt-Europe Cultural Cooperation program,
project ‘Outside In’: “The Art of Inclusion”, the first event series Sultan Qaitbay’s
Fair will be held on Thursday 1st of October in ‘City of the Dead’ from 6 pm to
9 pm. The fair aims at bringing together contemporary artists and local
traditional craftspeople who present their work to the public.
The
Fair celebrates the talents of local artisans who have been preserving their
traditional craftsmanship over the years. The displayed products on will
include hand-blown glass, silver inlay, brass, silver jewelry, mother-of-pearl
inlays, and turned-wood furniture. The fair will further feature paintings and
photographs; in addition to the screening of a documentary film "Hands
On" about the local craftsmen of the "City of the Dead".
The
‘hawd’ of Sultan Qaitbay opened last July after restoration, creating
sustainability in the neighborhood by turning it into a show room where local
craftsmen can display their products on a rotational basis. The restoration was
primarily financed by the European Union with an estimate of 50,000 Euros and a
contribution from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands worth 31,450
Euros, and has been implemented by the Cairo-based ARCHiNOS Architecture in
cooperation with the Ministry of State of Antiquities and its Historic Cairo
Project.
