Beyoncé May Be Joining Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, & Christian Bale in The Big Short
BY JOSH DUBOFF
It was announced a few months ago
that a verifiable A-list trifecta—Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Ryan
Gosling—would be co-starring in the adaptation of The Big Short, Michael
Lewis’s book about the housing and credit bubble of the early 2000s (which
unfortunately does not include a central love triangle between three strapping
40-something men, to be played by Pitt, Gosling, and Bale). The cast, as if it
needed it, received an added jolt of star power with the addition of recent
Oscar nominee Steve Carell (Adam McKay—best known for writing comedies like
Anchorman and Talladega Nights—wrote the script, and will be directin.
And now—despite all of these
high-profile players—the entire enterprise may be overshadowed by the addition
of perhaps the highest-profile of high-profile players: one Beyoncé. This
morning, Lewis appeared on CBS This Morning, where he revealed the film would
begin shooting today in New Orleans. (Bale arrived in New Orleans this weekend,
looking surprisingly Hemsworth-ian.) And then Lewis ran through the cast
members: “An incredible cast . . . Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell .
. . and I think Beyoncé.” “AND I THINK BEYONCE”!?!?!? ONE CAN’T JUST CASUALLY
DROP THAT DURING A MORNING SHOW INTERVIEW WITH NO FURTHER EXPLANATION, MICHAEL
LEWIS!
Beyoncé hasn’t appeared in a film
since 2009’s Obsessed, though she voiced the character of the appropriately
royal Queen Tara in 2013’s Epic, and shared screen time with Blake Lively and
Jake Gyllenhaal in a teaser video for her tour with Jay Z last year. If this is
true, it makes sense that Beyoncé waited for a project with adequate star-power
heft to make her return to the silver screen. “Pitt, Gosling, Bale, and Carell?
Sure, O.K., I’ll consider it.”
Update: Gossip Cop is reporting
that Beyoncé is not going to be appearing in the film, per a Paramount source.
We will post any additional information as it becomes available.
